Introduction to II Timothy

- Author. Paul wrote II Timothy (1:1) from his second and final Roman imprisonment in about 68 A.D. Paul knows that he is soon to be martyred for the faith (4:6-9).
- Recipients. II Timothy is written to Timothy (1:2), the young ( 3:22 , probably in his mid-30’s) pastor (4:2) of the church at Ephesus (1:3).
- Theme. The minister of the Lord Jesus Christ must be an example of gentleness, patient, reproving and instructing others, while always prepared to preach the Word of God (2:21-26, 4:1-4).
- Key verses. 2:24-26 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, 25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; 26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.
